CT Scanning

CT ScanningCT is a specialised x-ray technique using a machine that creates cross-sectional images of the area to be examined.

During a CT the patient lies on the table and is slowly moved into a donut shaped structure. A scanner then takes multiple cross-sectional pictures of you. These pictures are created with the help of a computer and are capable of depicting various internal body parts in much greater detail than standard x-ray films. This greatly enhances the doctor's ability to diagnose a medical condition.

To make a clearer picture of certain parts of your body, some CT scans require the use of contrast materials, which are substances showing up as pure white on the x-ray. Two types of contrast materials can be used: barium, which you usually drink, and iodine, which is usually injected by means of an intravenous line.

Multislice CT scanners used by GCMI are a further development of CT technology and allow faster examinations with a lower usage of intravenous contrast. These advanced machines can be used to examine all parts of the body, most commonly the head, chest and abdomen.
