X-ray

Plain x-rays

No preparation is required.

Mammography

Please do not use deodorant or talcum powder on the day of the examination. Bring previous mammogram films for comparison.

Barium Meal and Swallow

Nothing to eat or drink for eight hours prior to the time of the examination.

Barium Enema

Use the preparation kit provided and follow the instructions. If you are suffering from diarrhoea this may be omitted. Kits are available from the Southport and The Tweed Hospital clinics and should be collected two days prior to examination. Please call to arrange collection.

Intravenous Pyelography (IVP)

Two laxative tablets are to be taken on each of the two nights prior to the examination. Normal fluid intake. Nothing to eat for six hours prior to the time of the examination.

 

Ultrasound


Abdomen

Nothing to eat or drink for at least six hours prior to the examination.  Continue to take medication as necessary with a small sip of water.

Pregnancy / Pelvic

Two hours prior to the appointment, you will need to empty your bladder and drink one litre of water (not coffee or fruit juice).You need to finish drinking the water at least an hour before the examination. Do not empty your bladder until after the examination.

Nuchal Translucency

Two hours prior to your appointment you will need to empty your bladder and drink three glasses (not more than 500mls) of water (not coffee or juice).You need to finish the water at least an hour before th examination. Do not empty your bladder until after the examination.

Renal and Bladder

No solid food for four hours. As for pelvic ultrasound (above).

Breast, Thyroid, Duplex Carotids, Leg Arteries and Veins, Penile Doppler

No preparation required.

Renal Arteries

Fast for four hours prior to the examination. Drink 500mls of water one hour prior to the appointment time.

Abdominal Aorta Doppler

Fast for eight hours.

   
CT Scan +/- Fluroscopy

CT ScanCT Head, Chest, Spine, Sinus and Extremities

No preparation required.

CT Abdomen, Pelvis

Fast for four hours. You need to attend the clinic one hour prior to your appointment for preparation drinks.

CT Angiography

No preparation required.


Bone Densitometry

No preparation required.


Coronary Calcium Scoring

Results are best when your heart rate is relatively slow. You should avoid all stimulants prior to the scan, especially caffeine. No coffee or cola for at least four hours prior to the scan. Plan your arrival at our clinic so that you are not rushed.

Biopsy

Biospy Under Ultrasound or CT

Fast for four hours prior to the examination,
(not necessary for breast biopsy).

Virtual Colonoscopy

Use the bowel preparation kit provided (these can be collected at the Southport and The Tweed Hospital Clinics).
